Acceptance as a Key to Healing

When trying to heal physically or emotionally, it can get really easy to keep looking for answers. You may have tried many different treatments, supplements, and  habit changes yet still be struggling with symptoms. If you feel like you’ve tried everything; diet changes, lifestyle changes, supplementation, and so on: the pattern of continually digging for answers may be what is keeping you sick.

This is because our nervous system is the control center for our entire body. It is programmed for safety and threat. When it senses threat; it is in a stress adaptation that does not allow the body to perform optimally. The nervous system prioritizes only the bodily functions to move us away from a threat and therefore functions like digestion, reproduction, immune functions, etc are not a priority. In prolonged stress adaptations our body is no longer functioning properly and disease happens.

The action of continually looking for answers may be keeping you in a stress response. Our nervous system responds both to our thoughts and environment. If you are constantly worried, looking for answers, or wondering what you ‘Should’ be doing; your nervous system is sensing a threat. This is why acceptance is so important to healing. Acceptance can help move you into a ‘rest and digest’ mode, which can move you to healing.

When symptoms kick up and you start to worry; try to start catching yourself in your thought spiral. Bring your attention to the sensations in your body and tell yourself “it’s ok I am feeling this way, it will pass when it’s ready”. Continually catching yourself earlier in the process can start rewiring you out of adding to your stress response and allow your body to start moving toward regulation. Regulation is where the body repairs, and in repair is where your body can move toward health.

With time and repetition it can become more natural.
